My research experience at WashU has been an integral and enjoyable part of my undergraduate career thus far. I began research as a Summer Scholar in Biology and Biomedical Research as a researcher in a laboratory on the medical school campus. Though the project on which I worked did not match my interests, that summer provided an invaluable introduction to a more formal research environment. Since the early fall of my freshman year, I have been working in Dr. Barbara Schaal's laboratory on Hilltop campus. I cannot say enough about my experiences there. My co-workers and mentors are constantly available to answer my questions, teach me new concepts and techniques, and offer moral support. I have been able to work on two independent projects where my input was considered and implemented. Working in a lab has allowed me to learn about science in a concrete way and provides a practical foundation for the more theoretical discussions had in class. My recent receipt of the Goldwater attests to the strength and caliber of the research program here. (As a side note, I was also able to do research at the International Institute of Saint Louis. There, through the four-year program Medicine and Society, I looked at the medical care afforded to refugees in St. Louis. This project helped me develop a better understanding about how research can be used to identify, characterize, and solve a problem. Also, because I was exposed to such a wide diversity of people from the community, working at the Institute helped me build a sense of home here in St. Louis.)
Thank you for all that the Office of Undergraduate Research does. |
