Iboro Umana wins award at Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)
Iboro Umana, a student at Washington University in St. Louis, has been honored with an award for research presented at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS) in Orlando, Fla., on November 5-8, 2008.
ABRCMS is an annual conference organized by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and supported by a grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences.
Now in its eighth year, ABRCMS is the largest professional conference for biomedical students. More than 2,800 people attended this year’s conference, including 1,789 students, 501 faculty and program directors, and 442 exhibitors. The conference is designed to (i) encourage underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences and (ii) provide faculty mentors with resources for facilitating the success of these students.
During the four-day conference, more than 1,200 students participated in poster and oral presentations in ten subdisciplines of the biomedical and behavioral sciences. All undergraduate student presentations were judged by active-researcher scientists, and those students receiving the highest scores in each scientific discipline and in each educational level were given awards during the final banquet. Umana was one of 126 undergraduates who received monetary awards of $250 for their outstanding research.
