Office of Undergraduate Research Back to top
The purpose of this office is to promote and facilitate research by undergraduates. Research, the creation of new knowledge, is fundamental to the mission of the University. Likewise the education of undergraduates is fundamental to the mission: the learning opportunity in research is the experience of intellectual inquiry. We facilitate undergraduate research by maintaining a knowledge base of available opportunities, by uniting students and mentors, and by assisting with funding. We promote undergraduate research by providing forums for presentation of research, by assisting students to make effective presentations, and by informing our community of these activities.

WUURD Back to top
Much like the Symposium, the online journal provides an outlet for students to exhibit their work. We would like to make it clear that we hold no copyright on the articles; students are free to publish elsewhere. We will reserve the right to edit the articles for grammar and length, but always in close collaboration with the student. We are currently accepting submissions for 3000 word articles. Please follow all guidelines.
For samples of previous articles in WUURD, please check our online version by clicking here.

Undergraduate Research Awards Back to top
To promote outstanding undergraduate research, the office offers financial support in the form Undergraduate Research Awards. Past award amounts have ranged from $500-$3500. Undergraduates from all academic backgrounds involved in research are welcome to seek nomination from a faculty mentor. Nominations are accepted on a rolling basis for academic year research. Deadlines for summer research awards for off-campus research projects and/or in non-Life Science fields are March 1st. For examples of previous research awards click here.
Students seeking Undergraduate Research Awards outside of the Biology Department's SURF program should complete an Undergraduate Research Award Nomination form.
(For an example itemized budget narrative, please click here.)

Summer research in any field of Life Science on the Danforth or Medical School campuses is supported through the SURF (Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship) Program.

If you are an instructor and would like to nominate a student for an undergraduate research award, please complete and return the nomination form along with a letter of recommendation.
